Developing Economic Forecasting Model in Laos

In 2004, the project will conduct short-term economic forecasting and consumer trend surveys three times with the aim of setting the foundation for macroeconomic forecasting and monitoring in Laos.

  1. Conducting short-term economic forecasting and consumer trend surveys (April 2004 to March 2005):
    Forecasting/surveys will be conducted at the end of each quarter (Three quarters: June/September 2004 and January 2005.) The short-term economic forecasting surveys will target 300 companies and the consumer trend surveys will target a total of 500 households in the five main cities/regions of Laos.

  2. Local training for conducting short-term economic forecasting and consumer trend surveys (July and December 2004)
    The Malaysian Institute of Economic Research will send five specialists to Laos to provide training for the abovementioned surveys. Training will be primarily on research formulation, calculation, analysis, and report compilation.

  3. Training visit for mid-level policymakers from Laos Late Sep. to Early Oct. 2004):
    Six mid-level policymakers from finance-related Lao government agencies will visit Malaysia to learn about macroeconomic management.

  4. Compilation of a report on the Lao Economic Forecasting Model(Dec. 2004 to Feb.2005).
    The economic forecasting model will be completed and a report will be compiled. The report will be distributed to relevant organizations in Laos with the aim of promoting macroeconomic forecasting and monitoring in the country.

  5. Publication of an academic journal on civil servant systems:
    A bi-annual journal will be published in Burmese.
