Civilizational Dialogue: Promotion of Asian Intellectual Exchange and Mutual Understanding

The following activities will be conducted in this third and final year of the project:

  1. Science and Civilization Seminar (July 2004)
    A seminar with the sub-theme "life and civilization" will be held to explore the relationship between civilization and scientific technology issues related to life, such as bioethics, the environment, and state-of-the-art technologies. The seminar will invite Dr. Takafumi Matsui of the University of Tokyo, Dr. Kenichi Matsumoto of Reitaku University, and Dr. Daisaburo Hashizume of the Tokyo Institute of Technology as speakers from Japan as well as several speakers from overseas (US, Europe, Asia.)

  2. Networking between Japanese and Islamic Scientists (October 2004):
    With the aim of strengthening interpersonal ties between scientists from Japan and Islamic countries, the project will provide financial support to the international conference organized by the Islamic Academy of Science whose secretariat is located in Jordan. Japanese scientists will be invited to speak at the conference this year.

  3. Civilizational Dialogue Seminar (November 2004):
    A civilizational dialogue seminar will be held in Tehran inviting two specialists on Buddhism and Islam to speak at the seminar.

  4. Seminar on "Regional Conflict and Civilization Dialogue" (February 2005):
    The seminar will examine conflicts in Palestine, Kashmir, Iraq and other regions from the perspective of civilizational dialogue. The seminar will be held in India (tentative location: New Delhi) with the cooperation of Dr. L.M. Singhvi. Candidates for Japanese speakers are: Dr. Yasuaki Nara of Komazawa University, Dr. Tetsuo Yamaori or the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, Dr. Kenichi Matsumoto of Reitaku University and Dr. Daisaburo Hashizume of the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

  5. On-demand publishing: All seminar proceedings will be made available via on-demand publishing in Japanese and English.
