Human Resource Development in Conflict Prevention Activity

The Japan Center for Conflict Prevention (Japan)
This year the project will aim to cultivate human resources in the conflict prevention field through the activities listed below.
- Human Resources development for mine removal activities in Sri Lanka (year-round):
The Northeast region of Vavuniya in Sri Lanka has been devastated by civil strife. The project will train two Japanese leaders to direct and supervise mine removal teams in the area. Moreover, the project will form a mine removal team comprising 27 local staff in preparation for the mine removal activities.
- Citizen's Graduate School:
The project will aim to foster human resources in the field of conflict prevention by providing a graduate school level education on conflict prevention to people from all social backgrounds.
- Seminar course (August 2003):
A 3-week lecture course targeting primarily students will be held. Students will engage in discussions about both theoretical and practical aspects of conflict prevention with researchers, NGO staff active in conflict-affected regions, government officials and other professionals invited as lecturers. Students who complete the course with outstanding grades will be given the opportunity to study/train abroad.
- Open Lecture Course (September 2003):
A five day lecture course will be held in the evenings for people who are working and cannot attend the abovementioned course.
- Dissemination of Information related to Conflict Prevention:
The project will publish a quarterly public relations magazine in order to promote understanding of the activities of the Japan Conflict Prevention Center, and disseminate knowledge about the current state of conflict prevention.
