Capacity Building for Development in Central Asia and Caucasus

23,000,000 yen[Self-Operated/Commissioned Project]
The Sasakawa Peace Foundation,(Center for Effective Economic Policy/ Uzbekistan, FY2002)
Armenia will be added as a target country of the project starting 2003.
The project will conduct the following activities in Central Asia and the Caucasus.
- Survey Research: The project will select leading scholars and researchers from the target countries and commission them to conduct research on topics such as trade liberalization and integration into the global economy, revitalization of the private sector and promotion of industry, regional security and confidence building.
- International Conference (End of June 2003)
An international conference on central issues in the Central Asia and Caucasus regions will be held in Tbisili, inviting a total of 30 people from East Asia, Central Asia and Caucasus, and international assistance organizations.
- Seminar for announcing the research results (End of June 2003):
With the help of the Institute of International Economic and Political Studies in Moscow, the project will hold a seminar in Moscow inviting about 30 Russian scholars, researchers and policymakers.
- Constructing a Central Asia/Caucasus Information Dissemination Forum
In collaboration with Aki press, a media organization in Kirgistan, the project will strengthen the information dissemination capability of the target regions through periodical electronic newsletters and Internet conferences.
- Preparations for the 9th SPF Issyk-Kul Forum: The purpose of the SPF Issykul Forum is to announce the research results of this project, as well as strengthen the human network of those involved in the project. The possibilities of conducting research in Armenia and Gruziya will also be discussed.
- Dr. Boris Rumer of Harvard University will be commissioned to be an advisor for six months. The project will receive his advice and guidance on the selection of researchers, research themes, international conference, seminar, and Issyk-Kul Forum.
