Capacity Building of Bioethical Committee

Liaison Association of Medical School's Ethics Committees
The following activities will be carried out in this first year of a 3-year project.
- Survey and Analysis in preparation for compiling a guidebook:
The project will analyze the administration and screening criterion of ethics committees at home and abroad, through collecting information/literature and conducting hearing surveys of ethics committees.
- Compilation of a Guidebook:
A 7 or 8 member research group will be organized under the Liaison Association of Medical School's Ethics Committee. The group will compile a guidebook based on the abovementioned research results.
The guidebook will begin by providing basic background information and knowledge on ethics committees by giving a brief explanation of the history of ethics committees, the current situation in Japan, and the legal environment surrounding ethics committees. Following that will be a commentary on the common topics debated by ethics committee regarding research targeted at humans, such as human rights, informed consent, and personal information. The book will also examine specific cases related to gene therapy and human genome analysis, organize the points of debate, and give a detailed explanation so that the deliberation process can be understood.
