Developing Methods of Promoting Civic Participation in Science and Technology

|

11,500,000 yen[Grant Project]
Tokyo Denki University (Japan)
The following activities will be held in this first year of a 2-year project. Workshops will be held periodically by a group comprising eight core members.
- The project will conduct surveys and analyses on participatory methods currently being utilized around the world. The aim of the research is to identify the current situation and issues surrounding these participatory approaches, as well as the conditions under which they can be successfully applied. Since the skill of the facilitator plays a major role in the successful administration of a participatory meeting, the project will build a knowledge base by interviewing facilitators in Japan and abroad.
- Contemplating the Themes:
Four groups will be formed for each of the two themes メReproductive Medicineモ and "Organ Transplants," and each group will be interviewed separately. By doing so, the important issues for each theme will be identified, and the appropriate themes for the following year's participatory meeting can be discussed and decided. The research group will design the interview methods and analyze the responses, but the Dentsu Research Company will carry out the actual interviews.
- Development of new methods:
Based on the abovementioned survey results, a new participatory method that will further promote discussion between the panel of experts and citizens will be developed.
