Bioethical Issues of Intellectual Property Rights

In its final year, the project will continue its research, and organize a meeting of approximately 30 experts in Tokyo and Cambridge in order to review the research results.

  1. Continuation of Research
    Research/analysis will be conducted on the following points.
    1. The diverse positions and reactions of different parties concerned regarding the ethics of biotechnology: Religious organizations (Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism etc.), environmental protection organizations, social welfare organizations, industrial organizations.
    2. The possibility of "commercialization of life," as a result of granting patents to bio-related inventions
    3. Measures that can be taken within the framework of the current patent system
      - Research on the possibility of responding to (logical) issues and challenges within the framework of the current patent system

  2. Meeting of experts
    A meeting of experts will be held to review the research results. The results will be organized and made available as a written report and on the Internet.
    1. The first experts' meeting will be held in August in Tokyo
    2. The second expert's meeting will be held in February in Cambridge
