Forming a Distance Education Alliance for Progress in the Western Pacific

This project is aimed at strengthening the regional cooperation framework and improving the quality of distance education in the Western Pacific region. The five-year project period was divided into three stages. In the first year, surveys were conducted to find out the needs of the region and a distance education initiative was formulated. In the second year, a meeting was held in order to establish a distance education alliance in the Western Pacific region, and a regional initiative for distance education was formulated. In this 3rd year, capacity building activities and a study on satellite networks for distance education will be carried out.
- Study on Satellite Networks for Distance Education
With the cooperation of local communication businesses, satellite related American and Japanese organizations such as NASA, NASDA, NOAA, JMA, and the Japanese communications policy expert Kenji Saga, the project will conduct a feasibility study of next generation satellite communication for assistance projects in the Micronesia Region. A project proposal will be drafted and submitted to relevant aid agencies/organizations.
- Capacity building activities aimed at distance education and healthcare personnel
A 3-day workshop will be held according to the regional initiative on distance learning and healthcare formulated in the first two years. The workshop will invite teachers, doctors, nurses, technicians and other members of the community involved in distance education and healthcare.

Participants: A total of 40 participants: two each from Palau, Chuuk (formerly Truk), Pohnpei, Kosrae, and Majuro, and experts form the University of Hawaii and Japan.
