Assistance for the Reform of Vietnamese Journalism Schools

The following three activities will be conducted in the first year of the project.
  1. Short-term, intensive training in Vietnam (June 2003)

    Dr. Ang Peng Hwa, Dr. Hao Xiaoming (Vice President) and Ms.Sharen Liu from the Nanyang Technological University School of Communication Studies will visit Vietnam and conduct three-day seminars in Hanoi and Ho Chi-minh inviting approximately 40 participants, consisting primarily of instructors from Hanoi and Ho Chi-minh national universities. The subjects that will be covered at the seminar include: values of news and editing methods, ways to make good use of the context of the news, tapping into news sources, storytelling, and the difference between print media and broadcast media, fundamentals and application of journalism, Reassessing the University Curriculum, methods of mass media research, methods of drafting textbooks, among other things.


  2. Conducting Short-term, intensive training courses in Singapore (December 2003)

    Twelve members from the group that received the abovementioned training "1" will be sent to the Nanyang Technical University School of Communication Studies in Singapore for a week to receive technical training on how to use the facilities and equipment.


  3. Drafting textbooks (July 2003 to February 2004)

    Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tran (journalist for the Saigon Times) will write a basic textbook in Vietnamese entitled, "How to report the truth (tentative title)". Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tran will receive advice from the Nanyang Technical University School of Communication Studies in writing this textbook.
